Alumnae Use Handicraft Businesses to Help Others Succeed
In December, USAID Community Connections Handicraft Production and Marketing Exchange alumnae Humaya Mammadova and Gulshan Aliyeva opened two new workshops in Quba (north) and Fuzuli (central Azerbaijan). Humaya Mammadova is the director of Qadim Quba carpet-weaving company and Gulshan Aliyeva heads Karvan Handicrafts Association. The workshops, opened through an agreement between the two entities, will support the development of weaving businesses in Quba and Fuzuli.
The newly opened workshop in Fuzuli employs 15 women IDPs (internally displaced persons) from Nagorno Karabakh living in the new settlement near Boyuk Bahmanli in Fuzuli. The second new carpet workshop--opened by Qadim Quba in Khinaliq--provides work for 14 women. Women employed in these workshops make sumakhs, kilims and other handicraft products, which will be offered for sale by Karvan and Qadim Quba not only nationwide, but also internationally.
USAID supports rural business across Azerbaijan and these two alumnae serve to remind that Azerbaijanis themselves are full-fledged partners in these initiatives. “The work Qadim Quba and Karvan are doing,” Mammadova noted, “will play a big role in the development of the two regions.”
