Training DVD Targets Bulgarian Apparel Industry

More than 2500 apparel and textile companies generate a quarter of all Bulgarian exports and employ more than 170,000 people. The apparel industry faces severe threats from global competition but has failed so far to adopt a long-term strategy for success. To retain its competitive position, the industry needs to move away from the prevailing method of low-cost operations called “Cut, Made, Trim” and embrace the strategy of “quick fashion.” “Quick Fashion” capitalizes on the geographic proximity to EU markets by responding quickly to changes in fashion trends.

A change in strategy will require building skills for value chain management at the executive and middle management level of individual companies. USAID is encouraging the development of such skills through a series of awareness and training events. Recognizing that many managers are often too busy to attend these seminars, the project has produced a DVD featuring lectures and exercises on value chain presented by world-class experts with simultaneous translation. By allowing professionals to learn according to their own schedules, USAID hopes to increase the prevalence of value chain management in the industry.
