USAID Delivers Flood Relief to Western Georgia

More than 350 families in affected villages, like Phari, received supplies of food and medicine
More than 350 families in affected villages, like Phari, received supplies of food and medicine

This spring was marred by severe rainfall in the high mountainous regions of western Georgia. The resulting floods and landslides damaged houses, roads, bridges, and thousands of hectares of farmland. Many villages still remain without electricity and drinking water. A special task force has been established at Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide detailed information to donor organizations and the international community about the consequences of this disaster.

USAID was among the first international donor organizations to respond to the request for help from the Georgian Government. On April 30th, CHF International, with financial support from USAID, distributed $50,000 worth of food, first aid, and hygiene products to the flood-affected populations of western Georgia.

On May 11th, the U.S. Government provided an additional $75,000 for people living in the regions of Imereti, Svaneti, Racha-Lechkhumi, and Samegrelo. ADRA International, a U.S. Government-funded international development and relief organization, is overseeing the distribution of assistance.

To date, a total of 350 households from three villages of Phari, Tskhumari, and Nakra in Svaneti have already received much-needed assistance: food, hygiene products, and medicine.

In the coming days, ADRA will deliver assistance to the people living in the regions of Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi.
