Competitveness Project Builds Armenia’s IT Sector

Through its Competitive Armenian Private Sector (CAPS) Program, USAID has been fostering the development of the Information Technology (IT) cluster in Armenia by assisting businesses with improving the quality and productivity of their output, upgrading business and marketing practices, as well as building productive partnerships within the country’s IT sector to promote economic growth.

With CAPS consulting assistance, the Union of IT Enterprises (UITE) recently organized the third annual international exhibition of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), "DigiTec 2007", aimed at developing the ICT industry in Armenia and enhancing overall business environment in the country. In addition, the project seeks to help local IT companies prepare for and participate in technical and marketing events, as well as to mobilize cluster groups to support business development initiatives.

Over 6,000 people visited “DigiTec 2007”, where 47 exhibitors – eight international and thirty-nine local companies – demonstrated their innovations. Exhibitors included Microsoft, IBM, Armavia, National Instruments, Synopsys, Viasphere Technopark, Unicomp, Virage Logic, as well as educational institutions offering IT specializations such as the Yerevan State University, the Armenian-Russian (Slavonic) University, and the American University of Armenia. The Armenian Government’s representation was also noteworthy at this year’s exhibition.

The event was rewarding both for the participant companies and visitors. Some exhibitors reported receiving up to 100 leads, while numerous others signed contracts. “DigiTec fosters the promotion of local IT products domestically and for export. It also provides opportunities for international companies to present their output and to get acquainted with Armenian IT company capabilities, which stirs new leads and partnerships,” Armen Baldryan, the Director of Unicomp noted.

The “DigiTec” sphere spectrum this year included IT equipment, telecommunication, wireless networks, software applications, banking technology & financial services, e-commerce, IT and education, e-governance, computer graphics and multimedia. Two forums, "DigiTec - Business Solutions" and "DigiTec - Electronic Control", were also held within the framework of the event.

USAID’s CAPS program promotes the competitiveness of Armenian businesses in selected sectors to increase employment and improve business-capacity. Information Technology is one of the two initial clusters of the program, aimed at improving the business environment in Armenia and fostering cooperation among enterprises within the country’s IT sector. By assisting UITE in the development of the annual DigiTec trade show, CAPS seeks to foster Armenia as a leading regional IT center through increasing the participation of regional IT enterprises, potential investors and strategic partners in the exhibition, as well as to help local IT companies meet with potential customers and increase their sales.
