| On March 15-17, Heng-wei Cheng, neuroscientist, ARS Livestock behavior Research Unit, West Lafayette, IN, was invited to the the Keystone Symposium on Breeding and Genetics, Animal Behavior, Housing and Well-Being. This meeting was held in Des Moines, Iowa, and presented the current ARS research on Physiological Aspects of Genetic Selection in Farm Animals. |

| The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) - Livestock Behavior Research Unit in West Lafayette, IN hosted an Open House on June 3rd from 1-3pm, to celebrate the construction of their new research facility. This facility will allow expanded research of pre-harvest food safety in swine. |

| Trina Johnson with Purdue University, presented research at the North American International Society of Applied Ethology. This research was conducted with Dr. Susan Eicher (USDA-ARS), Dr. Jeremy Marchant-Forde (USDA-ARS), and Daniel Cary (Purdue University). The international meeting was held at Purdue University on June 19, 2004. The title of the presentation was “Age at Transport Effects on Behavioral Responses in Dairy Calves to Novel Stimuli”. The research investigated the long term fear response of dairy calves that were stressed by transport in the first week of life. |

| Dr. Susan D. Eicher gave two poster presentations at the International Veterinary Immunological Symposium in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada on July 28, 2004. The poster presentations are titled "TLR2, TLR2, IL-=1 and IL-1Ra Expression from Glucocorticoid Treated and Colostrum Fed Calves" and "Toll-like Receptors 2 (TLR2) and 4 (TLR4) of Porcine Blood Leukocytes during Heat-stress". Dr. Susan D. Eicher has also received an invited presentation to the Workshop titled Environment & Immune Response. |
