WASHINGTON, Sept. 7, 2004 – Enemy actions have resulted in the deaths of four U.S. soldiers in Iraq in the past two days. At least five others have been wounded.
At 12:19 p.m. today, a Multinational Division Baghdad patrol was attacked with small-arms fire, killing one American soldier from the 89th Military Police Brigade. A U.S. soldier with Task Force Baghdad was killed and two others were wounded earlier today during an insurgent attack in eastern Baghdad. The soldiers had come under a rocket-propelled-grenade attack in the Thawra district around 9:30 a.m. A U.S. soldier wounded during a Sept. 6 attack with an improvised explosive device in Baghdad died of his wounds early today. And another U.S. soldier, a member of 13th Corps Support Command, was killed during an attack on a convoy near Qayarrah around noon Sept. 6. The Thawra attack was one of nearly a dozen in the same district today that resulted in injuries to three other soldiers: - At about 12:30 a.m., a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at Task Force Baghdad soldiers, resulting in no injuries or damage.
- At about 1 a.m., an IED detonation resulted in no injuries or damage.
- At about 1:30 a.m., a Task Force Baghdad soldier was injured in an RPG attack.
- At about 2:30 a.m., another Task Force Baghdad soldier was injured in a separate RPG attack.
- At about 8 a.m., an IED detonation resulted in no injuries or damage.
- At about 10 a.m., five IEDs detonated, causing no injuries but damaging a vehicle.
- At about 10:30 a.m., an RPG was fired at Task Force Baghdad soldiers but injured no one.
- At about 11:30 a.m., a Task Force Baghdad soldier was injured in an IED explosion.
- At about noon, an IED detonated, again causing no injuries but damaging a vehicle.
- And at roughly 12:30 p.m., anti-Iraq forces fired a mortar near a school, but caused no injuries or damage.
In Mosul on Sept. 6, soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment detained a person suspected of coordinating insurgent attacks. And, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment soldiers in Mosul found a large cache of enemy weapons and ammunition Sept. 6. Items seized and destroyed included numerous 120 mm mortar rounds, 105 mm artillery rounds and 60 mm mortar rounds. (Compiled from Multinational Force Iraq news releases.)
