Research Project: Development of a Genotyping Platform to Enhance the Discovery of DNA Markers for Feed Efficiency

Location: Nutrition Research

Project Number: 5438-31000-086-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 27, 2007
End Date: Jun 26, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to collaboratively develop a high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) assay for cattle (Custom Infinium Cattle Genotyping BeadChip).

Approach:
As many as 60,000 single nucleotide polymorphism genetic markers will be identified and selected collaboratively to develop an assay for application to cattle. Illumina will provide to the USDA-Agricultural Research Service U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (ARS-USMARC) as described in this agreement, assay development, and reagents necessary to genotype cattle and the appropriate technical support. ARS-USMARC will use the BeadChip to genotype USMARC cattle populations. Collaboratively, genotypes will be used to implement whole-genome selection and high-density quantitative trait locus mapping.
