Title: Alternative Route to Licensure in Special Education (ARLISE) Program

Alternative Route to Licensure in Special Education Program Overview

**Candidates must be employed in a HIDOE SpEd position prior to program admission.**

In response to the shortage of certified special education teachers in Hawai‘i, the Office of Human Resources, Personnel Development Branch (PDB) of the Department of Education (DOE) has implemented the Alternative Route to Licensure in Special Education (ARLISE) Program.

The Alternative Route to Licensure in Special Education Program is designed to provide the essential skills and knowledge needed to effectively teach Hawaii's students with disabilities.

Hired individuals will complete requirements while employed in a contracted special education teaching position with the Department of Education. The program candidate completes seminar, online classes and/or university course work as well as field experiences.

Upon successful completion of the program, candidates are recommended to the Hawai‘i Teacher Standards Board for licensure. Licensure is granted upon fulfilling the PRAXIS Exam requirements.
