Research & Statistical Services
Ultimately, our goal as a research and statistical group is no different from that
of the National Safety Council as whole – making our world safer. We do it
through scientific approaches and methodologies that provide information, intervention
strategies and practical tools that significantly contribute to the cause of safety
and health.
Research and statistics have been a focus for the National Safety Council since
day one. The Council published the first comprehensive statistical compendium on
unintentional injuries and deaths in the early 1920s, shortly after its inception.
Since then, we’ve published statistical information annually, without interruption
– first as Accident Facts® and more recently as Injury Facts®. We’ve
also created a comprehensive system for tracking and compiling injury and illness
data.
The Council’s Research & Statistical Services Group is also responsible for the
Journal of Safety Research, an international, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary
journal published five times per year.
The Council has had basic research capabilities since the early 1960s. The current
Research & Statistical Services Group offers a diverse range of scientific expertise
– everything from safety engineering to epidemiology to social psychology
and, of course, statistics. We hold a philosophical position in our approach to
injury science. We believe that the causes of injury and illness are interrelated
and that the most fruitful preventive measures will reflect the dynamic interplay
of environmental, social, physical, emotional and behavioral factors. We are committed
to using all of the knowledge and scientific tools at our disposal to understand
and prevent injury and promote well-being.
