January 20th, students visiting from Germany stopped by the National Weather Service Forecast Office at Key West International Airport. The students learned about the role of a local forecast office when hazardous weather strikes, as well as the risks the Florida Keys face during hurricane emergencies. We also showed some of the instruments and tools used to detect dangerous weather, and how we use them to issue life-saving warnings.

In return, we learned what services are provided by Germany's weather service, known as Deutscher Wetterdienst, and about severe weather which affects Germany. Germany is prone to flooding, winter weather, strong damaging winds, hail and even tornadoes each year!
