•What are the concrete fortifications at the Park? American Memorial Park has several concrete fortifications known as “pillboxes.”  Japanese soldiers used these as defensive structures during World War II.

•What examples of native forests and species can be found at the Park? American Memorial Park contains a unique wetland ecosystem that represents the largest remaining mangrove forest on Saipan. This wetland complex is critical habitat for two endan-gered bird species, the nightingale reed warbler (Acrocephalus luscinia) and the Mariana moorhen (Gallinula chloropus guami).  A candidate genus of landsnails (Partula) is also at risk.

•Why was American Memorial Park established? American Memorial Park was established to honor the United States forces that fought in the Battle of Saipan. Nine soldiers who fought in this battle were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration of the United States Armed Forces, the last of which was awarded in May 1, 2002 to Army Captain Benjamin L. Salomon by President George W. Bush.

•What is the huge crab found on the island? American Memorial Park is home to the coconut crab (Birgus latro), a crustacean that can grow to a whopping 12 inches across!

•How many names are inscribed at the Court of Honor? The Court of Honor at American Memorial Park is inscribed with over 5,000 names and was dedicated on June 15, 1994, the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Saipan. 

•Are there any cultural festivals at the Park? Every year American Memorial Park is host to Micronesia’s largest cultural festival. The Flame Tree Festival is held in April and celebrates the art, dance, music and food of the Marianas and Micronesia. 

•What is the tree with the bright red and orange blossoms? The Flame Tree (Delonix regia), which is a common sight within American Memorial Park, received its name because the bright orange and red blossoms which the blanket the trees every spring create the illusion that the tree is on fire.

•What is the purpose of this war memorial for providing recreational opportunities? American Memorial Park has been developed as a “living memorial” and provides a variety of recreational and community activities for all park visitors.
