The Offices of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations and Environment) and the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management have produced an Army sustainability training video titled "Sustain the Mission - Secure the Future". The purpose of the video is to educate viewers on the concept of sustainability and how it relates to the Army Strategy for the Environment. The target audience includes Army leaders at all levels and installation staff members across all functional areas.
The video includes interviews with Army leaders promoting sustainability and Soldiers and Army civilians demonstrating sustainable practices at Army installations. The video also includes three case studies that focus on the application of sustainability to specific operations at a troop installation (Fort Lewis); a National Guard installation (Fort Indiantown Gap); and an industrial installation (Anniston Army Depot).
DVDs and VHS tapes of the video may be ordered through the Joint Visual Information Services Distribution Activity (JVISDA) -- the title is Army Sustainability: "Sustain the Mission, Secure the Future".
Sustain the Mission - Secure the Future Video ( 16 MINUTES, MPEG or REAL)
The video explains the six goals of the Army Strategy for the Environment and the military significance of the Triple Bottom Line, Mission, Community, and Environment, to long-term training and mission requirements.
Case Studies
Ordnance Case Study Video ( 6 MINUTES, MPEG or REAL)
Weapons systems can have an impact on the health of the environment, soldier, and the community during training, maintenance and demilitarization but sustainability can be a major consideration in the demilitarization of existing ordnance weapon systems, and the design of future weapons.
This case study illustrates how a Weapons System Program Manager economically used a Team Approach to apply all three principles of a Reduce-Reuse-Recycling strategy at the end of the life-cycle of the TOWs missile system. Examples of sustainability principles being applied to other ordnance systems are also introduced.
Stryker Case Study Video ( 5 MINUTES, MPEG or REAL)
The Stryker is one of the Army’s first premier combat vehicle systems that was designed with a focus on sustainability…a twenty-first century strategy that will change the way every Army installation in the world does business.
This case study illustrates how several installations, with different missions, needs and communities, incorporated the principles of sustainability into the acquisition planning, design and operations of the Stryker family of vehicles. The Stryker system helps sustain the environment, the community and, ultimately, the mission of the Army’s soldiers.
Facilities Case Study Video ( 7 MINUTES, MPEG or REAL)
Operations in facilities and infrastructure are a major functional area where sustainability practices can have long-term benefits for the mission, community, and environment.
This case study illustrates how the application of sustainability principles into everyday decisions and processes can ensure that the Army has the resources it needs to meet mission requirements for decades to come. Sustainability examples include facility design, operation and disposal; soil and water conservation; materials use and waste management; and transportation and energy conservation.
