Abstract: (CIT): One of NIH's major goals is to reduce disparities in health status experienced by racial and ethnic minority populations. What is "race"? What is "ethnicity"? The definitions for these classifications become crucial elements in pursuing this goal. But, are we doing the right thing? If we are more than 99% genetically identical, to each other, as human geneticists say, why are we so different? Indeed, genomic data raise disturbing questions about the scientific value of our current mode of classifying and categorizing individuals and populations. What data are obtained and lost in using the current system of classification and does it really allow us to address health disparities? What is the key impact of current policies of inclusion on clinical research and health disparities?
