As Carnegie brings together researchers, teachers, policymakers and members of organizations with common interests in education, we work to invent new knowledge and to develop tools and ideas that allow us to foster positive change and enhanced learning in our nation’s colleges and schools.

Knowledge Media Laboratory (KML)


The Knowledge Media Laboratory uses new media and emerging technologies to exchange information, share knowledge and produce innovations that can transform teaching and learning.



Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education™


The Carnegie Classification is the leading typology of American colleges and universities. It is the framework in which institutional diversity in U.S. higher education is commonly described.




Previous work in this area:



Foundations and Education Project
A project that sought to appraise the relationship of large philanthropic foundations to K-12 and higher education in order to enhance the ways foundations and institutions of education work together.

Survey Research
The Carnegie Foundation periodically conducted surveys to support its research programs.
