Program:Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth Grants

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awards Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth grants competitively to nonprofit organizations, including arts and cultural organizations, school districts, youth service and other community groups for specific projects. Many of the NEA Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth grant programs encourage partnerships in which private schools may participate. Individual schools, whether public or private, do not apply for or receive assistance directly, but they may participate in a consortium application or in a collaborative project that is submitted by an eligible organization.

The NEA's Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth category funds projects that help children and youth acquire knowledge and understanding of and skills in the arts. Projects must provide participatory learning and engage students with skilled artists, teachers, and excellent art, and may take place in school-based or community-based settings. The focus is on children and youth in the general age range of five through 18 years old.

All projects must include the following components:

  • the opportunity for students and their teachers to experience exemplary works of art, in live form wherever possible;

  • study of the art experienced including the acquisition of skills for practicing the art form where appropriate;

  • the performance/making of art within the discipline(s) studied; and

  • assessment of student learning according to national or state arts education standards.
