SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 299,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 304,000, a decrease of
1,000 from the previous week's revised average of 305,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Sept. 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Sept. 5 was 2,203,000, a decrease of 12,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,215,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,219,750, a decrease of 20,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,240,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 216,286 in the week ending Sept. 12, a decrease
of 39,818 from the previous week. There were 253,457 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending Sept. 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 1,813,373, a decrease of 122,405 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,944,767.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Aug. 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,533 in the week ending Sept. 5, an increase of 284 from the
prior week. There were 1,503 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 100 from the preceding week.
There were 17,026 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 29, a decrease of 540 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,345, an
increase of 45 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Aug. 29 were in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (3.3), Rhode Island (2.8),
Hawaii (2.5), New Jersey (2.5), Washington (2.5), California (2.4), Oregon
(2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Massachusetts (2.1), and New York (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Sept. 5 were in Minnesota (+7,866), North Carolina (+2,819), California
(+2,778), Indiana (+2,084), and Pennsylvania (+1,603), while the largest
decreases were in Georgia (-1,449), Tennessee (-1,258), New York (-1,067),
Arizona (-619), and Michigan (-607).
