SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 312,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 304,000. The 4-week moving average was 304,500, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 302,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Aug. 29, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 29 was 2,256,000, an increase of 17,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,239,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,250,500, a decrease of 18,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,269,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 254,363 in the week ending Sept. 5, an increase of 20,761 from the previous week. There were 224,950 initial claims in the comparable week in 1997.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,971,640, a decrease of 25,951 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,936,070.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,255 in the week ending Aug. 29, an increase of 16 from the prior week. There were 1,403 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 8 from the preceding week.

There were 17,563 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 22, a decrease of 927 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,305, a decrease of 155 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 22 were in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (3.5), Rhode Island (2.9), Arkansas (2.7), Hawaii (2.7), New Jersey (2.5), Washington (2.5), California (2.4), Oregon (2.4), and Pennsylvania (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 29 were in Georgia (+1,414), New York (+1,315), Washington (+1,309), Colorado (+1,084), and Iowa (+844), while the largest decreases were in South Carolina (-3,167), North Carolina (-2,339), California (-2,072), Texas (-854), and Pennsylvania (-823).
