SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 302,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was 302,250, a decrease of
1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 303,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Aug. 22, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Aug. 22 was 2,212,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,228,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,264,000, a
decrease of 55,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,319,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 231,713 in the week ending Aug. 29, a decrease of 7,854
from the previous week. There were 250,207 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending Aug. 22, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,973,375, a
decrease of 78,682 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8
percent and the volume was 2,053,517.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Aug. 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,242 in the week ending Aug. 22, an increase of 23 from the prior
week. There were 1,411 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 25 from the preceding week.
There were 18,577 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Aug. 15, an increase of 58 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,630, an increase of 459 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 15 were
in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (3.4), Rhode Island (3.0), Pennsylvania
(2.6), California (2.5), New Jersey (2.5), Washington (2.5), Hawaii (2.4),
Oregon (2.4), Arkansas (2.1), Connecticut (2.1), Massachusetts (2.1), New York
(2.1), and West Virginia (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 22 were
in Arizona (+1,476), South Carolina (+1,176), Texas (+1,091), Oregon (+316),
and Virginia (+191), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina
(-1,731), Puerto Rico (-1,137), Iowa (-907), Georgia (-784), and New Jersey
(-737).
