NLM Invites Nominations for IHTSDO Standing Committees

As the U.S. Member of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO), the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is soliciting nominations of potential candidates for the four IHTSDO Standing Committees – Content, Quality Assurance, Research & Innovation, and Technical. These Committees have important roles in the ongoing development of the SNOMED CT clinical terminology and the governance of the IHTSDO. The current roster, terms of reference, and recent reports of each Committee are available on the IHTSDO website (http://www.ihtsdo.org/about-ihtsdo/standing-committees/). The Committees are described in Sections 9.4-9.9 of the Articles of the IHTSDO.

Teleconference arrangements are available for all Committee meetings, but, given the geographic distribution of IHTSDO members (currently Australia, Canada, Denmark, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States), meeting schedules cannot be convenient for all relevant time zones. For US Committee members who wish to attend in person and need assistance to do so, NLM supports travel to at least two IHTSDO meetings per year.

Half of each Committee’s 12 members are serving terms that expire in October 2008. There may be additional Committee vacancies caused by resignations. Committee members whose terms are expiring are eligible for re-nomination. NLM may submit up to three (3) nominations for each of the four Committees, for consideration by the IHTSDO General Assembly. To develop its list of nominees, the NLM will consult with the Chair, Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel, the Chair, National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, and the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, Department of Health and Human Services, to select candidates from among nominations received by August 1, 2008. The IHTSDO General Assembly will elect the Committee members at its October 2008 meeting in Copenhagen.

Please submit nominations by electronic mail to Donnetta.Demyers@nih.hhs.gov by AUGUST 1, 2008. Each nomination must be accompanied by complete contact information, a 1-2 page biosketch covering relevant expertise and experience of the nominee, and a short (1/2 page) statement addressing her/his particular interest in and qualifications for the specific Committee(s) of interest. Individuals may nominate themselves.
