The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) improves the productivity and effectiveness of the Department of Education (ED) through the management of technology investments. OCIO considers overall agency needs and principal office priorities, assisting each office in using information technology dollars wisely while eliminating duplication of resources and effort and encouraging cooperation.

The office works hand in hand with the Investment Review Board, which advises the secretary of education on major investments.

OCIO is implementing an information technology architecture, which aligns IT resources with the Department Strategic Plan and reduces the risks of investing in products and systems based on complex and rapidly changing technologies. The project is documented in ED's Information Technology Architecture Framework and Information Technology Architecture Principles Guidance.

OCIO is also establishing an IT investment management program for selecting, managing, and evaluating ED's major information technology initiatives.
