Abstract: | (CIT): NCI Stars in Nutrition and Cancer In November 2007, the World Cancer Research Fund International, with its affiliate, the American Institute for Cancer Research, published the most authoritative review of the evidence relating food, nutrition and physical activity to cancer risk. The Report, "Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective," identified numerous exposures which were judged to be convincingly or probably causes of, or protective against, various adult cancers. Based on a comprehensive and systematic review of epidemiologic, clincal and laboratoy studies, expsoures which could be judged to influence cancer risk were identified. However, it is difficult to reconcile the huge variation in world-wide cancer patterns and with migration, with the relatively modest within-individual risks identified. This lecture series features extraordinary contributors or "stars" in the field of cancer and nutrition research. Speakers highlight the important role that nutrition plays in modifying cancer development. The lectures aim to facilitate interdisciplinary interactions among basic scientists, clinicians, and behavioral and social scientists. Lectures typically occur each fall and spring. Meeting Objectives: To emphasize the role of nutrition as well as genes in determining phenotype; To demonstrate the potential for early life events to induce phenotype, and for maternal exposures before and during pregnancy to influence phenotype in the offspring; To understand how these mechanisms might interact to influence cancer processes.
