U.S. Department of Labor Awards $285,742 Grant to Assist Dislocated Workers in Iowa

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today awarded a $285,742 grant to the state of Iowa to provide employment-related assistance to workers dislocated as a result of the closure of Regency Thermographers, located in Dubuque, Iowa.

"Iowa workers impacted by this closure can use this opportunity to educate and prepare themselves for new career options," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. "The grant announced today will provide these individuals with training and services that will help them compete for good jobs in growing industries."

On Aug. 24, 2006, Regency Thermographers announced it would permanently close as of Oct. 27, 2006. The state conducted four rapid response sessions with affected workers between Sept. 12 and Oct. 27 to inform them of the assistance available to meet their reemployment needs.

The grant, awarded to the Iowa Workforce Development, Iowa's workforce services agency, will provide participants with employment readiness services, job placement, case management and career and occupational skills training.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary of Labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants and other Labor Department employment and training programs, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
