Statement of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on Victory for Effort to Guarantee Overtime for Low-Wage Workers in the U.S. House Today

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement about today’s vote in the U.S. House of Representatives that permits the advancement of the Department’s overtime enhancement proposal:

“The House of Representatives today sent a clear message that the nation’s overtime rules need to be updated to protect millions of low-wage workers.

"The Labor Department’s proposal to strengthen overtime protections will automatically guarantee overtime for an additional 1.3 million low-wage workers. Modernizing these outdated regulations will not only better protect low-wage workers, but will also clarify the overtime rules for employers and employees. Union members subject to collective bargaining agreements are not affected by this proposed rule.

“Today’s action is a victory for workers and employers alike, and every Member of Congress who stood up and cast this very courageous and principled vote—especially the House leadership and Chairman John Boehner—deserves a great deal of credit.”
