Chao Inducts Two Unions into Labor Department's Century of Service Honor Roll

WASHINGTON— Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced today that the Department of Labor has inducted the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) and the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) into its Century of Service Honor Roll.

This exhibit, located in the north lobby of the Frances Perkins Building, displays commemorative plaques recognizing national labor organizations that are at least one hundred years old. Both of this year's inductees were established in Pennsylvania in 1901, the BRS in Altoona and IUEC in Pittsburgh, and are celebrating their centennials this year. They are affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

"It is a remarkable accomplishment that these two unions have served their members so ably and for so long," Secretary Chao said. "In representing workers in key areas of the transportation and construction industries, these unions have rendered a great service to the nation. I am delighted to welcome them into the select circle of Century of Service unions."

Plaques displaying the colorful and distinctive official seals of the BRE and the IUEC, along with historical information on their creation, are now on display. With these additions, Century of Service contains a total of 40 plaques honoring the nation's centennial unions.
