In Disaster Aftermath Labor Continues
National Emergency Grants Chao Awards $2.4 Million To Re-employ Laid Off
Workers In Massachusetts
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
announced a National Emergency Grant of $2.4 million to train and re-employ
Massachusetts workers who lost their jobs as a result of the Sept. 11
attacks.
Airline workers and those employed by related industries are
suffering as a result of the terrorist attacks on our nation, Chao said.
The president and this administration are committed to working with the
states to see every worker re-employed as quickly as possible.
The National Emergency Grant will provide re-employment assistance for
approximately 600 workers dislocated after the terrorist attacks. The project
will operate statewide once it has been established, and will directly target
workers dislocated from the Boston Logan Airport airlines, tenants and related
industries impacted by the tragedies.
Chao awards National Emergency Grants to supplement existing job
training programs in states that request help and demonstrate need. The
Massachusetts grant will provide workers with immediate recruitment, outreach,
job assessment, job search assistance, basic skills training and classroom
training.
National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President
Bushs Back-to-Work package. If passed by the Senate, the presidents
package will help the economy recover by providing increased assistance to
dislocated workers, including assistance with private health insurance
continuation coverage.
