OPA Press Release:

New Jersey To Receive National Emergency Grant In Wake Of Disaster
Chao Awards $3 Million To Re-employ Laid Off Workers In Garden State

WASHINGTON— U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of $3.2 million to train and reemploy New Jersey workers who lost their jobs as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“The administration’s number one priority is getting America’s workforce back on its feet,” Chao said. “New Jersey was hit hard by the terrorist attacks and this National Emergency Grant will enable the state government to provide the programs that are necessary to reemploy all dislocated workers.”

Chao awards National Emergency Grants to supplement existing job training programs in states that request help and demonstrate need. The New Jersey grant will provide approximately 2,500 workers with immediate recruitment, outreach, job assessment, job search assistance, basic skills training and classroom training.

National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President Bush’s Back-to-Work package. If passed by the Senate, the president’s package will help the economy recover by providing increased assistance to dislocated workers, including assistance with private health insurance continuation coverage.
