Secretary Chao Announces $1 Million To Promote Women In Apprenticeships and Nontraditional Occupations

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced today that the Department of Labor has awarded $1,000,000 in grants in 11 communities to establish apprenticeship and recruitment programs for women in nontraditional jobs.

"We're working to improve opportunities for women in nontraditional occupations," Chao said. "This program will assist women to gain the skills they need to find and hold good jobs, particularly in fields many women have not previously explored."

Under the "Women in Apprenticeships and Nontraditional Occupations" (WANTO) initiative, 11 community-based organizations are receiving grants to provide on-site technical assistance to employers and unions that develop strategies to increase the employment of women in apprenticeship and nontraditional occupations.

Women's Bureau Director Shinae Chun praised the WANTO program as one that provides opportunities for women to earn higher wages and better benefits.

"These grants will promote access to training, opportunity, and advancement for women," said Chun. "For many, it is also a path to economic security and self sufficiency."

The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations grantees are: Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc., Portland, Ore.; Young Women's Christian Association, Omaha, Neb.; Nontraditional Employment for Women, New York, N.Y.; Resource Center for Women, Largo, Fla.; Maui Economic Development Board, Kihei, Hawaii; Women in the Building Trades, Dorchester, Mass.; The Access Agency, Inc., Williamantic, Conn.; Women Work!, Washington, D.C.; Century Housing, Culver City, Calif.; Women Venture, St. Paul, Minn.; Women in Community Service, Inc., Alexandria, Va.

The Women's Bureau administers the grants with the Labor Department's Office of Apprenticeship Training, Employer and Labor Services. The WANTO grant program is executed under the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations Act of 1992.
