WASHINGTON - Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao
announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor will host a national Summit
on the 21st Century Workforce on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the MCI Center in
Washington, D.C.
The day-long event will begin with a breakfast featuring
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan at 8:30 a.m. The public portion of the
program will begin at 9:30 a.m. with remarks from Secretary Chao, and a variety
of speakers and events lasting until 4:30 p.m.
Speakers include: Secretary of Education Rod Paige;
Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans; Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift;
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer; Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Harley
Davidson Jeffrey Bluestein; Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees
International Union President John Wilhelm; President and CEO of
Hewlett-Packard Carleton (Carly) Fiorina; CEO of Marriott International, Inc.
Bill Marriott; CEO and Founder of Monster.com Jeff Taylor; and Wal-Mart
President H. Lee Scott.
ABC Television's Cokie Roberts will moderate the morning
session of the program and FOX Television's Tony Snow will moderate the
afternoon.
The summit will also host a job fair - free and open to the
public - with 128 regional employers on the two concourses of the MCI Center.
The job fair will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Doors for the summit and job
fair open at 8:00 a.m.
"This summit is a chance for leaders from business,
organized labor, government, and the nonprofit sector to discuss the
transformation of our workforce into the workforce of the 21st century," Chao
said. "In order to prepare our country's workforce to thrive in the new economy
of this 21st Century, our country must understand the workforce changes that
are occurring at an accelerating pace. We need to focus on the skills gap
within the workforce, the demographic changes facing the workforce, and the
future of the workplace."
In addition to the speakers at the MCI Center, six
Department of Labor job sites across the country will participate in panel
discussions via satellite. The entire event will be broadcast live over the
Internet at www.dol.gov.
