REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED
DATA
In the week ending June 9, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 428,000, a decrease of
12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 440,000. The 4-week moving
average was 424,500, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week's revised
average of 415,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 2,
unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending June 2 was 2,935,000, a
decrease of 53,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,988,000.
The 4-week moving average was 2,867,250, an increase of 63,000 from the
preceding week's revised average of 2,804,250.
UNADJUSTED
DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under
state programs, unadjusted, totaled 392,445 in the week ending June 9, an
increase of 53,815 from the previous week. There were 267,735 initial
claims in the comparable week in 2000.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 2, unchanged from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,699,880, an increase of 70,697 from the preceding week.
A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,849,401.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during
the week ending May 26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former
Federal civilian employees totaled 1,604 in the week ending June 2, an increase
of 463 from the prior week. There were 868 initial claims by newly discharged
veterans, a decrease of 104 from the preceding week.
There were 14,447 former Federal civilian
employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 26, an increase of 216
from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled
12,426, an increase of 1 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the
week ending May 26 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (4.5), Oregon
(3.4), Washington (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.0), Arkansas (2.8), California (2.7),
Rhode Island (2.6), Michigan (2.5), Mississippi (2.5), and Wisconsin
(2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the
week ending June 2 were in Ohio (+3,191), Kentucky (+2,928), Texas (+1,942),
Tennessee (+1,581), and South Carolina (+ 1,294), while the largest decreases
were in California (-5,893), Michigan (-3,647), Wisconsin (-2,066), North
Carolina (-1,813), and Virginia (-1,661).
