Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on
August Unemployment Numbers
WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao released
the following statement on the August unemployment numbers released today:
“This Labor Day we really have something to celebrate: 12
straight months of job creation. Thanks to President Bush’s steady
leadership, this economy has created 1.7 million new jobs over the past year,
including 144,000 jobs last month alone, and nearly 60,000 more jobs than what
was initially announced in the previous two months.
“Still, we will not be satisfied until every American who wants a
job can find one. When Congress reconvenes, it needs to act on the President's
proposals to further strengthen our economy and create more good-paying
jobs.”
