U.S. Department of Labor wins 8th straight Certificate of Excellence in Accountability Reporting from Association of Government Accountants

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Labor today announced that it has received its eighth successive Certificate of Excellence in Accountability Reporting (CEAR) Award from the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) for the department's outstanding Fiscal Year 2007 Performance and Accountability Report. Chief Financial Officer Douglas W. Webster accepted the award on behalf of the department at a ceremony held last night in Washington at the National Press Club.

"In this administration, the Department of Labor has excelled in informing the public on how taxpayer dollars are spent as well as delivering better results for America's workers," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

The Performance and Accountability Report is the Labor Department's principal publication for the public to see how the department managed its programs and resources in a given year. The report notes performance accomplishments and reflects the expenditure of public funds.

The department's Fiscal Year 2007 Performance and Accountability Report also was ranked this month by George Mason University's Mercatus Center as one of the best in federal government concerning accuracy, transparency and public benefit.

CEAR Award recipients are determined by a panel of senior-level AGA members representing chief financial and inspector general offices, performance measurement experts and independent public accounting firms.

"The Department of Labor has made a concerted effort to produce an effective and useful Performance and Accountability Report. We understand the importance of remaining transparent and accountable to our many stakeholders, and we are proud that we have earned the CEAR Award for the eighth consecutive year," said Webster.

The Office of the Chief Financial Officer leads the Labor Department's financial management and fiscal integrity effort. For more information, visit the office's Web page at www.dol.gov/ocfo.
