The U.S. Department of Labor Establishes First Federal
Agency-Wide Toll-Free Information Service

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently established an Information Service to better serve its customers. By calling 1-866-4-USA-DOL, America's employees and employers can find answers to questions on a range of employment and regulatory issues. This toll-free service offers live operator assistance and is a central access point for all DOL services and programs. DOL can assist workers and employers in more than 140 languages with questions about job loss, business closures, pay and leave, workplace injuries, safety and health, pension and health benefits, and reemployment rights for reservists.

While many program-specific call centers exist (e.g., for USCIS and IRS), the DOL Information Service is the first department-wide toll-free information service for any federal government agency. Its mission is to promote compliance assistance, service delivery and customer satisfaction by providing timely, accurate and consistent responses to telephone inquiries, print and publication requests, and e-mails.

Additional Department of Labor toll-free numbers to call for questions regarding specific issues are listed below:

  • 1-877-US-2JOBS - Job Loss, Layoffs, Business Closures, Unemployment Benefits and Job Training
  • 1-866-4US-WAGE - Pay, Overtime, Leave and Child Labor
  • 1-800-321-OSHA - Workplace Safety and Health
  • 1-877-889-5627 - TTY Number for the Hearing Impaired for all Department of Labor Questions

DOL's Toll-Free Information Service was launched on Labor Day 2001. It operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and provides 24/7 monitoring for the Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (OSHA) Emergency Response Line.
