U.S. Department of Labor Partners with Associated
General Contractors to Promote Compliance Assistance
WASHINGTONDeputy Secretary of Labor Steven J. Law today
signed a Compliance Assistance partnership agreement with the Associated
General Contractors of America (AGC) to promote greater awareness of and
compliance with the Departments laws and regulations among AGC members.
This is the second such agreement under the new Partnerships for Compliance
Assistance Program.
As partners, AGC and DOL will work together to educate members of the
construction industry about compliance assistance tools and other resources
that help employers meet the requirements of federal employment laws. The
partnership program is another step in the Compliance Assistance Initiative
announced by Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao in June 2002.
Todays agreement reflects Secretary Chaos vision of
compliance assistance for the Department of Labor, where we match targeted
enforcement with meaningful outreach to employers and workers, said
Deputy Secretary Law. Most employers want to do the right thing when it
comes to protecting workerswe need to do our part as well. And
far-sighted associations like AGC understand that compliance assistance
partnerships enable them to provide an important value-added service to their
members.
Through the partnership, AGC will help foster compliance with DOLs
laws and regulations through a variety of member outreach activities. Specific
cross-promotional tactics include: distributing DOL educational materials to
AGC members; planning articles for AGCs member publications; and having
DOL participate in AGC conferences, workshops and other training
opportunities.
AGC has had a strong relationship and good communication with DOL
for many years, and we welcome the opportunity to formalize that
relationship, said Stephen E. Sandherr, AGCs Chief Executive
Officer. When the department issued its call for partners, we quickly
agreed to join PCAP in a positive effort to increase our members
knowledge and understanding of federal employment laws and regulations,
said Sandherr.
Last month, DOL signed an agreement with the Society for Human Resources
Management (SHRM) under the new partnership program.
AGC is the nations largest and oldest national construction trade
association, representing more than 35,000 firms. More than 14,000 service
providers and suppliers are also among the firms associated with AGC through a
nationwide network of chapters.
