Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao on One-Year Anniversary of President’s Jobs and Growth Act

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao released the following statement on the first anniversary of the signing of President Bush’s Jobs and Growth tax-relief package:

“One year ago, the President signed the Jobs and Growth Tax Act of 2003. The Jobs and Growth Act was very appropriately titled, since jobs and growth have been the two main results of the much-needed tax relief that American workers received from that legislation.

“As a result of the President’s Jobs and Growth tax-relief package, 1.1 million jobs have been created since last summer. Over the last year, employment is up in 44 states and the unemployment rate has declined in 47 states.

“The President’s plan has also helped strengthen economic growth. With strong 4.4 percent economic growth in the first quarter of this year and the strongest three-quarter growth rate in almost two decades, there’s no doubt the President’s plan is improving the lives of millions of American workers.”
