U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Recognized By Police Sergeants Union of NYPD

NEW YORK—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao was awarded the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) Heroism Award in recognition of her accomplishments on behalf of the nation's workforce. Secretary Chao delivered the keynote address at the SBA's 40th Annual Scholarship Dinner in New York.

“President Bush and this Administration recognize the hard work—and the danger—New York City police officers face every day,” said Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao. “They are among the new heroes that America came to know after 9/11. We will never forget that day, what our police force did to protect America or what it takes to ensure that it will never happen again.”

The SBA recognizes individuals who have played significant roles in helping our nation prosper during challenging times with their annual Heroism Award. Secretary Chao was recognized for protecting the rights of the nation's workers. This year's awards were bestowed in memory of four brave sergeants: Sergeant John Coughlin, Sergeant Michael Curtin, Sergeant Rodney Gillis and Sergeant Timothy Roy, who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association is the labor organization representing New York City's approximately 10,000 active and retired police sergeants. SBA also provides a variety of benefits for its members including: serving as a collective bargaining representative, providing health and welfare programs and sponsoring community service initiatives. The association is foremost an advocate for New York City's police sergeants.
