UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 318,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 311,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised average of 315,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 9, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 9 was 2,461,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,490,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,477,250, a decrease of 5,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,482,750. 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 264,251 in the week ending Sept. 16, an increase of 23,991 from the previous week. There were 346,204 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,161,058, an increase of 26,879 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,311,981.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 980 in the week ending Sept. 9, an increase of 3 from the prior week. There were 1,822 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 78 from the preceding week.

There were 14,103 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 2, a decrease of 530 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,387, a decrease of 1,252 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 2 were in Puerto Rico (3.1 percent), New Jersey (2.9), Michigan (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Alaska (2.5), Connecticut (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), Massachusetts (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), New York (2.1), and Oregon (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 9 were in Iowa (+1,420), North Dakota (+936), Oregon (+348), North Carolina (+268), and Georgia (+264), while the largest decreases were in California (-4,517), Louisiana (-2,245), New York (-2,196), Indiana (-1,657), and Michigan (-1,558).
