UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 308,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 313,000. The 4-week moving average was 314,250, a decrease of 1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 315,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Sept. 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 2 was 2,499,000, an increase of 18,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,481,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,485,000, a decrease of 500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,485,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 238,134 in the week ending Sept. 9, a decrease of 21,502 from the previous week. There were 322,387 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Sept. 2, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,141,215, a decrease of 99,317 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,216,756.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 26.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 973 in the week ending Sept. 2, a decrease of 274 from the prior week. There were 1,888 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 57 from the preceding week.

There were 14,634 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 26, a decrease of 98 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,636, a decrease of 96 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 26 were in Puerto Rico (3.7 percent), New Jersey (3.0), Michigan (2.8), Pennsylvania (2.8), Alaska (2.6), Connecticut (2.5), Rhode Island (2.5), Massachusetts (2.4), Arkansas (2.2), New York (2.2), and Oregon (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 2 were in Louisiana (+3,035), Illinois (+2,224), Michigan (+2,181), Indiana (+1,588), and Pennsylvania (+1,547), while the largest decreases were in New York (-1,981), Kentucky (-1,851), California (-912), Tennessee (-596), and New Jersey
(-571).
