U.S. Department of Labor announces grant of more than $1 million to assist BRAC-affected workers in Missouri

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,040,969 grant to the state of Missouri to assist approximately 225 workers affected by the closure of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) facilities in Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo. The closure is part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) actions.

"This grant of more than $1 million is to help these Missouri workers transition to new careers and assist the communities affected by the closure of the facilities," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

The grant was awarded to the Missouri Division of Workforce Development and will help assist workers and communities affected by these BRAC-related closures.

On June 30, 2005, Missouri received a $1 million grant to begin planning for the closing of the DFAS facilities in Kansas City and St. Louis. With those funds, the state formed the St. Louis Regional BRAC Task Force to provide guidance and direction in identifying areas to target for assistance and for developing strategies to assist affected workers.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary of Labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants, please visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
