Afghan Childrens Fund To Receive $25,000 In Aid
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
accepted a $25,000 check donated by Job Corps students to the Afghan
Childrens Fund during a press conference and rally at the ResCare home
offices in Louisville, Ky. Chao also recognized two Job Corps students from the
ResCare Bronx Job Corps Academy who assisted in the evacuation of the World
Trade Center and surrounding buildings on Sept. 11.
The President has asked that every child in America give one
dollar to help the children in Afghanistan, Chao said. The young
people of Job Corps have heeded the Presidents call and taken it to an
even higher level.
Chao also recognized two Job Corps students from the ResCare Bronx Job
Corps Academy who assisted in the evacuation of the World Trade Center and
surrounding buildings on Sept. 11.
Angel Figueroa and Kareem Miller were at Ground Zero on Sept. 11.
In spite of the risks to their own safety, they stayed nearby to help the
injured. Their selfless acts on that day exemplified the spirit of giving that
President is encouraging, Chao said. It is with great pleasure that
I present them with certificates of commendation for their courageous actions
on September 11.
Job Corps students who attend ResCare operated centers in 11 different
states and Puerto Rico collected $15,000 in donations after the Sept. 11
attacks. ResCare and the Educational Management Corporation both provided
$5,000 in matching funds.
The Job Corps program is the nation's largest and most comprehensive
residential education and job training program for at-risk youth, ages 16
through 24. For more information please go to
