Using Research Data

About Datasets

A dataset contains raw data gathered from research and surveys and any reports or analysis of that data. GSA Datasets are available to all researchers.

GSA takes the following measures to ensure the datasets on this site contain valid data:

  • Each dataset comes from a reputable source, contacted and interviewed by GSA personnel.
  • All variables are clearly defined.
  • The primary researcher provides detailed information on the data and the data collection process.
  • Researchers or their affiliated organizations are easily contacted.

Even with these efforts, GSA cannot absolutely guarantee the validity of the data. Researchers must evaluate data for themselves and determine its usefulness. Please read the Download Agreement for more information about this responsibility.

Using Datasets in Your Research

There are numerous possibilities for using the datasets on this site in research efforts. Here are some suggestions:

  • Combine two or more datasets to investigate larger trends or explore specific variables over time.
  • Perform analyses on the data using different theoretical approaches or combinations of variables.
  • Conduct an exploratory analysis on a construct embedded within the data.
  • Test theory by applying a theoretical model to a dataset generated without theory.
  • Perform a meta-analysis.

The goal of this site is to promote good science. Although there are some limitations to how these data may be used, there are also many ways the datasets may be used effectively, with creativity and ingenuity.

How to Download Datasets

To access the data and related files on this site:

Step 1: Go to the Registration page and complete the User Information Form.

Note: Filling out this form is not required. However, providing this information is important. It will help foster collaboration between researchers, encourage the sharing of new findings, and help improve the usability of the site.

Step 2: Go to the Raw Data Library. This page contains tables for each of the available datasets. Each table contains a data file and supporting documentation.

  • To open a file, simply click on it. To save it, choose Save As from the File Menu of your browser.
  • Or, right-click on the document and choose Save Target As from the pop-up menu.

Step 3: Read the Download Agreement.

Note: The use of the datasets on this site require strict adherence to ethical guidelines regarding the use of secondary data. Please read the Download Agreement carefully to be sure you understand these ethical obligations before downloading and using the data.

Step 4: Finally, please remember to Share Your Findings when your research is finished.
