RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Dr. Booth’s research has encompassed two disparate areas: basic native-plant physiology at the seed level, and more recently, rangeland monitoring / remote sensing. His native-plant investigations included seed production, harvest and handling, storage, testing, dormancy and germination, and establishment. His remote sensing accomplishments are based on work done with Dr. Paul Tueller at the University of Nevada Reno, and resulted in methods for obtaining and using Very Large Scale Aerial (VLSA) imagery for rangeland monitoring. The resolution of VLSA imagery ranges from <1 to ~20 mm / pixel ground sample distance (GSD). Dr. Booth’s current interests are in improving VLSA and associated tools and methods and in applying them to a wide range of natural resource monitoring needs. This includes faster and more accurate methods for measuring ground cover from high-resolution images, methods for using VLSA imagery with satellite imagery, the use of UAV platforms, and most importantly, the application of these tools and methods to better inform land-management decision making for the sustainable use of all our rangeland resources.
