Will be you traveling outside of the United States after June 1, 2009?

The final phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will come into effect for land borders and sea ports-of-entry on June 1, 2009.  U.S. citizens will be required to present a U.S. passport book, U.S. passport card, or other document approved by the Department of Homeland Security to enter or re-enter the United States through land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region, and Bermuda.

For information about obtaining a passport book or passport card visit www.travel.state.gov or call the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 1.877.487.2778.

Current processing time for U.S. passport books or U.S. passport cards is approximately 2 weeks for routine services and fewer than 2 weeks for expedited service.  Processing times vary depending on level of demand.

There are 68 passport acceptance facilities in South Dakota, including U.S. Post Offices, Clerks of Court, and other municipal offices.  A listing of the locations of these acceptance facilities is available on the website above.

I wish you safe and happy travels abroad.

Best wishes,

Tom Dravland
