10% Improvement (2008)

Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District is the largest school district in Somerset County, New Jersey, educating over 9,000 students across eleven schools. While the district has been recognized nationally for its academic and athletic achievements, it continually strives for improvement in all areas. The district partnered with Schools for Energy EfficiencyTM (SEE) and became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2007. With the help of SEE and the ENERGY STAR program, the district was able to implement a number of low- and no-cost operational and behavioral energy efficiency strategies to avoid spending more than $300,000 in the first year alone.

The school community is very proud of its decreased environmental impact; the district avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to planting more than 200 acres of trees or the emissions from more than 150 cars in one year. Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District promotes its energy-saving strategies and successes through e-mail newsletters, visual reminders, web site information, committee meetings, assemblies and school clubs. One school has a "Blackout Day" to explore how electricity is used in the classroom.
