Eden Prairie Schools ISD 272

Eden Prairie, Minnesota
10% Improvement (2006)
Top Performer (2008)

With nine separate schools serving approximately 10,000 K-12 students, Eden Prairie Schools ISD 272 has assessed the energy performance of 100 percent of its schools, undertaken improvements, and achieved recognition for improving the energy efficiency of its building portfolio by more than 10 percent.

Officials at Eden Prairie Schools partnered with Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy to implement their energy efficiency program. The district has realized an energy cost avoidance of over $2 million during the past 3 years. By reducing its energy use, the district is also preventing more than 5,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually, and officials have reinvested nearly $100,000 from equipment rebates into automation and lighting upgrades. As a result, ISD 272 has two buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance, and they have also achieved Top Performer recognition for having an average portfolio rating of 75 or better.  As the district looks to save even more energy, facilities management will work very closely with principals to implement an energy conservation program at each school, which includes volunteer parent energy monitors and an emphasis on student involvement.

Eden Prairie Schools joined ENERGY STAR in 2005.
