SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 279,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 275,000. The 4-week moving average was 295,000, a decrease
of 5,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 300,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending July 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 24 was 2,247,000, a decrease of 42,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,289,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,252,000, an
increase of 11,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,240,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 252,562 in the week ending July 31, a decrease of 41,567
from the previous week. There were 277,621 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending July 24, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,161,888, a
decrease of 83,317 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,314,333.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 17.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,521 in the week ending July 24, a decrease of 464 from the prior
week. There were 1,201 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 35 from the preceding week.
There were 17,110 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 17, an increase of 1,553 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,644, a decrease of 70 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 17 were
in Puerto Rico (5.8 percent), Alaska (4.0), Rhode Island (3.3), Michigan (2.8),
New Jersey (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.6), Washington (2.6), California (2.5),
Oregon (2.5), and Arkansas (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 24 were
in Ohio (+6,286), Maine (+224), Washington (+130), Colorado (+92), and Georgia
(+48), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-22,777), New York
(-6,864), South Carolina (-6,169), Alabama (-5,470), and Illinois (-4,948).
