SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 302,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was 309,250, an increase
of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 309,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending June 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 12 was 2,231,000, an increase of 47,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,184,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,205,000, an
increase of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,194,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 266,832 in the week ending June 19, a decrease of 785 from
the previous week. There were 322,017 initial claims in the comparable week in
1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending June 12, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,025,366, an increase of 20,056 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,970,932.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June
5.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,651 in the week ending June 12, an increase of 13 from the prior
week. There were 1,113 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 101 from the preceding week.
There were 13,190 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 5, an increase of 1,178 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,742, an increase of 412 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 5 were in
Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Alaska (4.8), Washington (2.8), Oregon (2.7),
California (2.5), Rhode Island (2.5), Arkansas (2.3), New Jersey (2.3),
Pennsylvania (2.3), and West Virginia (2.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 12 were
in California (+3,786), Pennsylvania (+3,560), Florida (+2,291), Tennessee
(+1,691), and Michigan (+1,001), while the largest decreases were in Texas
(-4,159), Mississippi (-1,215), Alabama (-728), Kentucky (-612), and Nebraska
(-571).
