SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 323,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,250, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 305,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending May 29, unchanged from the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 29 was 2,195,000, a decrease of 30,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,225,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,188,500, an increase of 250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,188,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 254,775 in the week ending June 5, a decrease of 5,478 from the previous week. There were 289,495 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending May 29, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,981,663, a decrease of 13,932 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,944,655.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 22.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,138 in the week ending May 29, an increase of 101 from the prior week. There were 1,028 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 66 from the preceding week.

There were 12,793 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 22, a decrease of 237 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,907, a decrease of 458 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 22 were in Alaska (5.3 percent), Puerto Rico (4.8), Washington (2.9), Oregon (2.7), California (2.5), Rhode Island (2.4), New Jersey (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), West Virginia (2.3), Arkansas (2.1), Hawaii (2.1), and Idaho (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 29 were in Michigan (+1,938), Texas (+1,676), Mississippi (+1,328), Arizona (+1,203), and Missouri (+1,046), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-1,210), California (-815), Oregon (-723), Georgia (-390), and Tennessee (-205).
