In the week ending Feb. 6, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 281,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 294,000. The 4-week moving average was
297,750, a decrease of 19,750 from the previous week's revised average of
317,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 30, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 30 was 2,264,000, an increase of
52,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,212,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,263,750, a decrease of 22,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,286,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 342,798 in the week ending Feb. 6, a decrease of
6,786 from the previous week. There were 368,113 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4
percent during the week ending Jan. 30, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,847,640, an increase of 46,958 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,768,380.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Jan. 23.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,608 in the week ending Jan. 30, an increase of 49 from the
prior week. There were 1,409 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 112 from the preceding week.
There were 19,898 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 23, a decrease of 2,234 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,980, an
increase of 936 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Jan. 23 were in Alaska (7.3 percent), Puerto Rico (7.1), Rhode Island (4.4),
Idaho (4.0), Washington (3.9), Oregon (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.4), West Virginia
(3.4), Montana (3.3), California (3.2), Maine (3.2), and New Jersey (3.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Jan. 30 were in California (+4,144), New Jersey (+1,209), Arkansas (+598),
Puerto Rico (+583), and New Mexico (+576), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-6,646), Alabama (-3,723), Tennessee (-2,539), Ohio (-2,086), and
Georgia (-2,061).
