SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 278,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 293,000. The 4-week moving average was 293,500, a decrease of
6,000 from the previous week's revised average of 299,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent for the week ending Oct. 16, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 16 was 2,120,000, a decrease of 64,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,184,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,165,750, a
decrease of 13,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,178,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 249,696 in the week ending Oct. 23, an increase of 14,702
from the previous week. There were 275,574 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during
the week ending Oct. 16, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,774,402, an
increase of 73,190 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5
percent and the volume was 1,814,386.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,435 in the week ending Oct. 16, a decrease of 1,258 from the prior
week. There were 1,031 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 295 from the preceding week.
There were 17,892 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 9, an increase of 2,776 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,423, an increase of 271 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 9 were in
Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (3.6), Oregon (2.1), Rhode Island (2.1),
Washington (2.1), California (2.0), Hawaii (1.9), Nevada (1.9), New Jersey
(1.9), and Pennsylvania (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 16 were
in Ohio (+1,501), Kentucky (+602), Indiana (+436), Vermont (+67), and Wyoming
(+26), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-7,375), California
(-6,136), Pennsylvania (-3,092), Illinois (-2,662), and Texas (-2,562).
