U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

Office of Public Affairs

STATEMENT BY SECRETARY OF LABOR ROBERT B. REICH

Tues., Dec. 12, 1995

For more information call: 202/219-8211.

Investigators from OSHA are on the scene in Methuen now and will be working with the state to investigate the cause of the explosion and fire that destroyed Malden Mills. The serious injuries and the loss of so many jobs is a terrible blow to the workers and the city especially at this time of year. The Labor Department is moving quickly to do all that it can to help the workers whose jobs were devastated by this fire.

An emergency one-stop employment center for the Malden Mills workers has been set up in nearby Lawrence to take unemployment insurance claims, and provide re-employment and re-training services.

In addition, the Labor Department has been working with the state since early this morning on its application for emergency funds that could be used to hire some of the Malden Mill workers to clean up the site. One-third of the approved amount could be sent to Massachusetts as early as tomorrow.

We are committed to helping as much and as quickly as we can.
